Petrol hike advances sales of diesel cars

High interest rate on loans, compounded with successive petrol price hikes have left consumers opting for diesel cars over petrol cars. Some diesel variants are doing much better than their petrol counter parts. For example demand for diesel Maruti Swift hatchback, SX4 and Dezire accounts for 70% of sales of these cars. Recognizing the trend most companies like Volkswagen, Hyundai Motors, Tata Motors and General Motors are planning to add more diesel variants to their collection. Reports also suggest soon Tata Nano, Toyota Etios and Chevrolet Beat might be available in diesel.

Tata Motors Limited is in the process of launching a stripped down version of Aria in July, 2011. Currently costing Rs 14 lakh and up, Aria is Rs 3-4 lakh costlier than its contenders like Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova. With an eye to improve the car sales, "The new variant should be at least Rs 2.5 lakh cheaper," commented a company's vendor.

India has become the world's largest exporter of small cars as companies find it more economical to market the smaller car models made in India. The reasons for these international giants to choose India as their production base rests primarily on India's well developed steel and metallurgical industries and mature vendors of auto components. India will produce 2.7 million passengers cars in 2011-2012 of which 25 percent will be exported.
