Gas prices are going up, smaller cars are better than ever, and once again, U.S. car buyers are turning their sights toward higher gas mileage. For that, there's nothing that beats the 2011 Toyota Prius, with its 50-mpg combined EPA rating. But will that Prius hold up? Will the battery pack and electric components work properly after the shine has...
One of the most remarkable--and most delayed--of the promised new generation of electric cars is the three-wheeled Aptera 2e. The unusual, highly aerodynamic vehicle was designed by a startup automaker in Southern California. The resin-bodied car was a finalist at last year’s Auto X-Prize competition despite early handling concerns. Like...
Well, looks like Chrysler is getting closer to playing with the big kids at last. The back-from-bankruptcy third U.S. automaker, now effectively controlled by Italy's Fiat, is putting together a financial package that will allow it to pay off all the money invested in it by the Obama Administration during the 2009 auto-industry bailout. 2011 Engine of the Year winners announced The results of the 13th international Engine of the Year (EOTY) awards were announced on Wednesday and BMW again sweeped most of the categories. However, CAR's technical editor and EOTY juror, Jake Venter, questions the validity of some of the results...
It's been rather quiet in the CAR offices for the last few days as a number of our team have packed their bags and headed off to warmer climes to sample some exciting newcomers to the automotive sphere. CAR journalist Wilhelm Lutjeharms headed to Spain to try out Citroën's DS4 – a stylish model that we think will offset the mixed reception its somewhat dowdy C4 stable mate received. Our editor, Hannes Oosthuizen, travelled to Austria to sample a very different proposition in the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid - this preview of future performance motoring mates a supercharged 3,0-litre V6 with an electric motor to give near-V8 levels of performance with only a fraction of the thirst. Closer to home, we see the launch of facelifted versions of the Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Captiva and Honda Accord. This is also the last week that the May issue of CAR magazine is on sale, and those eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new BMW M5 (as we are) can feast their eyes on a video of the new super saloon taking to the track. If you haven't yet experienced the May 2011 cover coming to life, check out the AR code at the bottom of this newsletter, go to CARmag.co.za/AR and see for yourself.
BMW M5 undergoes performance testing BMW's M-Division is putting the finishing touches on its latest M5 super saloon. In this video, filmed at Miramas in southern France, shows M5 prototypes negotiating a dynamic driving course and do smoky take-offs courtesy of the on-board launch control systems.
It's been almost three years since Hyundai introduced its keenly packaged i10 budget car to the local market, but the Korean manufacturer has now refreshed the range, which incorporates a revised look, a new engine and added standard specification … at reduced prices!
Jaguar XJ 3,0 V6 Portfolio The S-Class has had its day... Since its launch nearly six years ago, Mercedes's flagship has been the best car in its class. But, bar a caveat of two, Jaguar's XJ comes very close to matching the S-Class on these points while providing a far superior driving experience.
