Image: VolkswagenHow long would it take you to drive 16,000 miles, on paved roads and dirt, across 14 countries and through every kind of weather imaginable? Most of us wouldn’t even sign on for the trip, but if you’re Rainer Zietlow, Carlos Fernandez and Marius Biela, the correct answer is 11 days, 17 hours and 22 minutes. That’s how long it...

John and Helen Taylor depart on the Smarter Driving Tour. Image: ShellJohn and Helen Taylor aren’t like most ordinary tourists. The Australian couple is driving across the United States for the third time in less than five years, but they’re not here to visit the Grand Canyon or Mt. Rushmore. Instead, the Taylors are here to break their own contiguous 48-U.S.-state hypermiling record, set in 2009 behind...

Top Gear Stage Another Electric Car StuntA little over a week ago, the BBC aired an episode of its popular motoring entertainment program Top Gear in which presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May searched in vain for an electric-car charging station. They needed to recharge their fully-drained 2011 Nissan Leaf in the rural English county of Lincolnshire. Needless to say, they had...
