| | | Change a winning recipe? Mike Fourie writes... [E-mail the author] | | There has been a deluge of widely divergent responses to pictures of the Land Rover DC100 concept, which is said to preview the 2015 replacement for the long-serving Defender, this week. On the one hand, traditionalists celebrate the go-anywhere utilitarianism of the Defender and scoff at the idea that its successor might have an integrated bumper and (cough!) half-moon wheelarches, but others, clearly intoxicated by the allure of the Range Rover Evoque, welcome the idea of an "affordable" Landy with city slicker appeal. Time waits for nobody, of course, and although I think the production "DC100" will be tougher than its looks, there's no doubt that it will feature 21st century technology and have a multi-purpose slant… as all other Land Rovers do. Kia, on the other hand, has no qualms about starting a design with a clean sheet of paper and the new Rio, which I drove in Portugal this week, represents the biggest single leap from one generation of a vehicle to the next that I have encountered in recent memory. Also check out the video to see the Rio from all angles. I often find myself stuffed in the boot, hanging out of sunroofs and balancing on the back of bakkies. It's not comfortable or glamorous, but sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to get that perfect shot. | | | Read more... | | | |
