Cars.co.za environmental tip

Don't coast in neutral!

When freewheeling downhill, keep your car in gear!

This is both safer and more fuel efficient as your car doesn't have to idle.

Rotating your car's tyres

It is important to rotate your tyres to ensure that the wear remains equal on all the tyres, as well as maintaining balanced handling and traction.

This is achieved by "rotating" or changing the position of tyres in a specific pattern. Essentially you want each tyre to serve in as many different wheel positions as possible.

If there is no recommendation made by the manufacturer we would recommend rotating your tyres every 12 000 Km even if there is not much sign of wear.

Rotation patterns and procedures vary on different vehicles. This is because some tyres are sized specifically for front and back and others are created to be used only on the left or right hand side of the car. Front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and 4x4 vehicles also require different rotations.

The examples to the right show the most common rotation patterns:
  • A: The 2 front tyres move to the rear, while the rear left tyre moves to the front right and the rear right tyre moves to the front left (front-wheel drive).

  • B: The 2 rear tyres move to the front, the front right tyre moves to the rear left while the front left tyre moves to the rear right (rear-wheel drive or 4x4 car).
We recommend paying a visit to your local tyre expert. They'll be able to help you with balancing after rotation and give you good advice on extending the life of your tyres.
