Leaving the scene of an accident can be a criminal offence Put your vehicle's hazard lights on and if possible, move your car to the side of the road Assess if anyone in the accident has been injured and if so call the necessary emergency services ambulance: Johannesburg: 011 375 5911 Cape Town: 021 480 7700 Obtain accident information Exchange information with the other parties involved in the accident. Be sure to get the following: Contact numbers and names. Be sure to check the other driver's licences to make sure the information you are getting is legitimate Licence plate numbers of any other cars involved in the accident Details of the other driver's insurance companies, including their policy numbers Legal obligation All parties involved in the accident are required by law to report the accident to the closest police station within 24 hours or to a police officer at the scene, if there is one. Towing advice It is likely that a tow-truck will have arrived at the scene by now. If towing is necessary, check with your car insurance provider to see if they supply a towing service as part of your cover and if the current tow-truck is allowed to move your car.
