| | How to Push-start your car
If you do not have the capabilities to jump-start your car and it has a manual transmission, push-starting your car may be an option. However if you turn the key in the engine and the engine does not roll over at all, chance are push-starting will not work.
If the engine does roll over but does not start, then follow the steps below to push start your car successfully:
- Firstly make sure you are in a safe and open area with no oncoming traffic, a downhill slope is preferable.
- Be sure to turn off all accessories (Radio, windscreen wipers etc)
- Turn the key in the ignition to the "on" position (The "on" position is just before the engine start position)
- Ensure your immobiliser has been deactivated.
- Push the clutch pedal to the floor and put the car into first gear or second gear
- Have someone push the car forward. The faster the better
- Once the car is rolling, quickly release the clutch pedal
- This should turn the engine over and the car should start
- Repeat these steps if it does not take the first time
Things to note regarding the push-start - While you are being pushed, your brakes will not be as responsive with the engine off, be sure to brake earlier than you would usually
- Your steering wheel may be locked with the engine off, make sure you have a clear path ahead before you begin rolling
- If the car still does not start, it could mean that the battery or the alternator needs to be replaced.
